'Father' of Colorful Jewelry Opens Shop in Fair OaksDimitri Grekoff isn't the average jeweler, and he hopes his new jewelry store in Fair Oaks will be anything but average.
Grekoff is the owner of Village Treasures, a new shop in the Fair Oaks Village, but he's also a priest at Saint Barnabas the Apostle, a Sunset Boulevard Chaldean Catholic church. "I've been a wholesale jeweler for most of my career," Grekoff said. "Now I'm just going to make my own designs–things I like." Grekoff sells jewelry, but he also makes it. He said his gift-oriented store, which opened for theFair Oaks Chicken Festival, will feature brightly colored gemstones and jewelry of his own designs, some of which will be religious. "The sense of art is very important in the Catholic belief," he said. He said bright gemstones, which he has collected for 30 years, are hard to find at most jewelry stores. Because of that, he doesn't consider his store to be in competition with other jewelry stores in the village. "I'm offering unique products, many of which are not found elsewhere in Sacramento," he said, citing local honey and hard-to-find olive oil, as well as religious paintings he plans to carry from artists in Bulgaria, Russia and Ukraine. Grekoff, who has lived in the Sacramento area for about 20 years and currently lives in Wilton, said he spent a year and a half trying to find an open storefront in the village. "This used to be the artistic area of Sacramento, and that's kind of coming back now," he said. When a customer came into Grekoff's store looking for a gift, the shopkeeper asked him several questions about the woman he was buying the gift for. Grekoff later said that when he helps customers pick out gifts, he asks them questions about the recipient, revealing the kind of relationship they have. It's similar, he said, to the pre-marital counseling he has done for many years as a priest. -- Village Treasures is located at 10144 Fair Oaks Blvd., and can be reached at 916-436-4462. It's open 11-5 on Tuesdays through Fridays, 11-4 on Saturdays, and "after church 'til 4" on Sundays. It's closed on Mondays. | We are dog friendlyVillage Treasures is dog friendly.
